Water is the essence of life. It is the most indispensable nutrient in our body. It is not just the basis for a fountain of youth, but the crucial fountain of being. Nutrient deficiencies may take weeks, months or years to develop. A deficiency in water and survival is only a few days.
Why do I need fluid?
Fluids are needed for several functions in the body. It helps to keep a healthy fluid balance inside and outside of every cell in the body, acts as a transporter to carry waste and nutrients, helps to maintain blood volume and regulate body temperature, is involved in several metabolic reactions, and so much more
How much water do I need?
Water comprises about two-thirds of an adult body weight. It varies depending on a person’s body composition of lean tissue and fat. Fluid requirements can also vary day to day depending on activity levels, the weather, and other variables. Tired? Hungry? Constipated? Ensure you are well hydrated. Always aim for a pale straw colour in your urine - if it's yellow, don't let it mellow! Drink up!
What type of fluids should I have? Are they all the same?
Water is the best source of fluids, and other nutritious fluids such as milk, juices, and herbal teas also provide benefits. Alcoholic and caffeinated drinks are also fluids, though they can act as diuretics causing water loss. Thus when deciding a drink, make the drink a fountain of youth and choose those that provide benefit for your health.
